Creative Mentoring for Children’s Book Makers

For more than 15 years, I’ve worked as a children’s author-illustrator, book designer, and art director. I’ve published eight of my own titles and have illustrated and art-directed books for other authors, publishers, and organizations. Over time, I’ve had the privilege of seeing the children’s book world from various angles — creative, practical, and professional.

I regularly receive emails from aspiring writers and illustrators. Many people dream of creating a children’s book but aren’t sure what to do next. Others have a manuscript or early sketches and don’t yet understand the scope, cost, or craft required to turn an idea into something truly special.

In the past year especially, I’ve found myself stepping into mentoring and advisory roles for young creatives — from “blue sky” conversations to advising on university coursework. I was surprised by how naturally this role fit. While I tend to be a perfectionist with my own work, mentoring allows me to clearly see others’ strengths, motivations, and unique artistic voices — and to help them articulate and refine those things with confidence.

Creative work can be isolating. Many emerging artists and writers carry their ideas quietly, unsure where to share them without fear of dismissal or misunderstanding. Having a thoughtful, experienced sounding board can make all the difference — not just in improving the work, but in sustaining the courage to keep going.

I’m now offering limited one-on-one creative mentoring sessions for writers, illustrators, and creatives interested in children’s books, storytelling, and publishing. Sessions are billed at $75 for the first hour and $60 for each additional hour. These conversations are designed to give you practical tools, honest feedback, and clear next steps — tailored to where you are right now.

If you’re serious about your creative goals and would value thoughtful, experienced guidance, you can book a session directly using the scheduling calendar on this page. My availability is limited, but I would be glad to help you move forward with clarity, encouragement, and purpose.
